Agricultural Conservation Technician

The James River Soil and Water Conservation District (JRSWCD) is currently accepting applications for its full-time Agricultural Conservation Technician position. The primary job responsibilities include implementing and supporting program participation in the Virginia Agricultural Best Management Practices (BMP) Cost-Share and Tax Credit Program (VACS), Conservation and Nutrient Management Planning, the Equipment Rental Program, and occasionally the Virginia Conservation Assistance Program (VCAP). This job requires the applicant to attain their Conservation Planning Certification within 18 months of the hiring date, or as soon as training is available from DCR. The applicant is also encouraged to acquire DCR Engineer Job Approval Authority. This position also provides program support related to District events and activities within Prince George and Chesterfield counties.

The successful candidate must have excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills and be able to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with district staff, board members, program participants, and members of the public. A successful candidate must also be able to multitask and prioritize effectively, work cohesively and productively in a collaborative team-based office environment, and work independently under general supervision. This position requires the physical ability to perform assigned tasks involving loading, lifting, and carrying moderate weight (25 lbs).

The successful applicant should have a four-year degree in a relevant field such as agriculture or natural resources. The successful applicant must have relevant experience performing comparable duties or must demonstrate an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the necessary knowledge and skills. The successful candidate must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License recognized in the Commonwealth of Virginia and be able to travel, including overnight travel, when necessary for training, meetings, events, and otherwise as required to perform duties and responsibilities.

This position is based in the James River SWCD office in Prince George, VA. The salary range is $47,000-$55,000 and may be negotiable based on the relevant combination of education and experience. Benefits include full healthcare coverage, a quarterly 15% contribution to a SEP retirement account, annual paid time off, a personal telephone stipend, and reimbursed travel mileage.

Conservation Planning Certification Information

This Department of Conservation and Recreation program allows soil and water conservation district (SWCD) staff and partners to obtain conservation planner certification and write conservation plans based on resource needs and farmers’ goals to protect natural resources and support agricultural operations.
