Want to become a James River Soil & Water Associate Director?

Apply to be an Associate Director for the James River Soil and Water District now! A JRSWCD Associate Director is appointed by the JRSWCD Board of directors. They provide support and advice to the other elected officials of the district. The Associate Director does not have an official vote in the main board meetings, but their impact is felt. The position is a volunteer opportunity and receives no compensation. 

The main duties and responsibilities of an associate director include:

  • Attending monthly District meetings
  • Participation in District committees and work groups
  • Staying informed and informing others about issues regarding conservation
  • Recognizing natural resource management needs that can be met through District programs.
  • Providing assistance/advice in District policy and development of programs
  • Participating in public and community relations activities to promote District programs
  • Providing financial direction, advice and oversight
  • Assisting with preparation of strategic and yearly plans of work
  • Participation in statewide meetings and workshops on conservation concerns 

Helpful Skills & Knowledge

  • Understanding the need for conservation of soil, water and other natural resources 
  • Other qualifications that will be helpful but not necessary to have:
    • Knowledge of agriculture and rural land issues
    • Knowledge of urban development issues
    • Environmental awareness
    • Background in local, state and national legislative processes
    • Skills in acceptable conduct of meetings and parliamentary procedure
    • Technical background in environmental sciences and engineering

Estimated time commitment is roughly five hours each month. Includes approximately three hours per month for Board meetings.

Terms of service state that Associate Directors will be appointed on a rolling basis with possible reappointment each January.
